Unified Fire Authority Firefighters to be Honored as Saturday’s RSL/American Express “Heroes Among Us” Recipients
SANDY, Utah (Friday, September 24, 2010) – One of the annual highlights of Real Salt Lake’s home schedule – the renewal of the Rocky Mountain Cup series against the Colorado Rapids – returns to Rio Tinto Stadium this Saturday, Sept. 25, when the two squads will pick up one of Major League Soccer’s fiercest rivalries with an 8:00 p.m. MT kickoff. Tickets for the Saturday evening rivalry showdown in Sandy remain available and can be purchased online at www.RealSaltLake.com and www.RioTintoStadium.com, over the phone at 801-727-2700, and in person at the Rio Tinto Stadium Box Office until 6:00 p.m. on Friday and on game-day beginning at 10:00 a.m. MT.
As it has the last two seasons, Real Salt Lake (13-4-8, 47 pts.; 2nd in West) will once again look to clinch a berth into the MLS Cup Playoffs against the Rapids (10-7-7, 37 pts.; 4th in West), and can do just that with a win or a tie coupled with losses by Kansas City and Seattle. A win would also potentially draw the Claret-and-Cobalt even with the L.A. Galaxy in the race for the MLS Supporters Shield, as RSL sits just three points behind the Galaxy in the chase for the League’s overall standings lead heading into the weekend, with L.A. facing a stiff challenge against the New York Red Bulls on Friday night.
Carnival Real Opens at 6:00 p.m. on Stadium’s East Lawn; Jean’s Golden Girls to Entertain Crowd at Halftime
Before Real Salt Lake looks to extend its MLS record home undefeated streak to 24 games, bring the family out early for extra good times and giveaways at the Carnival Real pre-game festival, which will open up on the East Lawn of Rio Tinto Stadium two hours before kickoff at 6:00 p.m. MT. Saturday’s Carnival Real celebration will feature live music from local band Outersite as well as booths and displays hosted by several of RSL’s partners:
Budweiser (“Designated Driver of the Game” sign-up), Burger King (“Whopper Hopper” inflatable and Prize Wheel), Check City (“Street Soccer” challenge), KB5, KFC, Mountain America Credit Union, Pixels Foto & Frame, Play N Trade, State Farm (foam finger giveaway), Vitality Nutrition, and Wasatch Property (Real Nation sign-up).
When gates at Rio Tinto Stadium open to the masses at 7:00 p.m., fans will also have the chance to visit the Comcast, Salt Lake Regional Medical Center and Utah Department of Public Safety (“Responsibility Has Its Rewards” sign-up) booths, located on the Stadium’s North Concourse. In addition, fans can drop by the RSL 2011 Season Ticket Headquarters booth and take in the ESPN700/Freedom 570 America First Credit Union Pre-match Reportshow, both located on the Northeast Concourse. And if you want some face time on national TV, drop by the Southwest Concourse, where host Todd Grisham will be anchoring the “MLS on FSC” Pre-game Show beginning at 6:30 p.m.
You will want to make the run to the concession stands at the halftime break a quick one, as the intermission entertainment will be anchored by the popular Jean’s Golden Girls dancers! The Utah-based dance troupe, featuring more than 100 women between the ages of 50- and 93-years-old, will be making their Rio Tinto Stadium debut after bringing crowds from coast-to-coast to their feet across the last dozen years.
Get Your Nachos Half-off through Halftime via RSLexpress!
When it comes to concession stand favorites, it just doesn’t get much better than the old tray of nachos (with or without jalapenos … completely your call!). Unified Fire Authority Firefighters Honored as Saturday’s RSL/American Express “Heroes Among Us”
Real Salt Lake and American Express are proud to recognize firefighters from the Unified Fire Authority as Saturday’s recipients of the American Express“Heroes Among Us” award.
The “Machine Gun Fire” that was set ablaze in the Oquirrh Mountains last Sunday took a turn for the worse as it headed for the town of Herriman, Utah, causing an immediate evacuation of nearly 5,000 residents.  While thousands acres of land have burned since last weekend, surprisingly few homes – and, most importantly, no lives – were lost due to the swift response of the Unified Fire Authority. When the fire began, authorities predicted about 100 homes would be engulfed by the rapid-moving blaze, but with the hard work and quick reaction of the UFA firefighters, damages have been minimal, something Utah Governor Gary Herbert called “a miracle” earlier this week.
Enough cannot be said about the dedication, bravery, and perseverance of all firefighters serving our communities; but today, for all their hard work during the “Machine Gun Fire” and for making a difference in the lives of the people whose homes were in danger, Real Salt Lake and American Express proudly congratulate the hundreds of members of the Unified Fire Authority for being true “Heroes Among Us.”
