SANDY, Utah (Monday, August 23, 2010) – Real Salt Lake will rack up the frequent flier miles in what will mark a hectic – and potentially historic – week for the defending MLS Cup champs, who will travel both south and north of the border for matches in CONCACAF Champions League and MLS regular season play.
Real Salt Lake’s second Group A fixture in the CONCACAF Champions League will be first on the docket this Wednesday, Aug. 25, when the Claret-and-Cobalt will head to Mexico City for a crucial showdown against Mexican Primera Division power Cruz Azul. Kickoff from Estadio Azul is set for 6:00 p.m. MT for a match that will be televised live on Fox Soccer Channel and TeleFutura. Fans will also be able to follow the action as it happens on RSL’s official radio partners – ESPN 700 (America First Credit Union Pre-match Report starts at 5:00 p.m.), ESPN Deportes 1600-AM, and Homero 106.1-FM – and the club’s official Twitter feed, located at www.Twitter.com/RealSaltLake
Following a 2-1 comeback win over Arabe Unido of Panama last Wednesday in Sandy, Real Salt Lake is the co-leader in Group A after CCL Matchweek #1 alongside fellow MLS side Toronto FC, which defeated Cruz Azul by a similar 2-1 scoreline last Tuesday in Ontario. Real Salt Lake will be looking to make a bit of history on behalf of Major League Soccer come Wednesday night, as a win would mark the first for an MLS side in a CONCACAF competition on Mexican soil. In the other Matchweek #2 contest in Group A, Toronto will travel even further south for its road date with Arabe Unido on Tuesday evening (6:00 p.m. MT, Fox Soccer Channel).
There will be no rest for the weary travelers this weekend, as both Real Salt Lake (11-4-6, 30 pts. in MLS) and Toronto FC (7-8-5, 26 pts.) will head to the shores of Lake Ontario following their midweek COCNACAF encounters to prepare for their match-up in League play this Saturday, Aug. 28. Kickoff from BMO Field in Toronto for Saturday’s affair is set for 5:00 p.m. MT for a contest that can be seen on KUSG 2.2(Comcast #111 / Dish Network #12) and also followed live on ESPN 700 (America First Credit Union Pre-match Report begins at 4:00 p.m.), ESPN Deportes 1600-AM, Homero 106.1-FM, and RSL’s Twitter feed.
Saturday’s contest will wrap up the 2010 regular season series between RSL and the “Reds,” which the Utahans kicked off with a 2-1 win back on May 1 at Rio Tinto Stadium, first half goals from DF Jamison Olave and MF Andy Williams proving enough to defeat the Canadian club. That result brought the all-time ledger between the two sides even at 3-3-1. Real Salt Lake and Toronto will become quite familiar with each other across the next month, with Saturday’s league affair to be followed by a pair of CCL contests in short order – first on Sept. 15 in Sandy and again at BMO Field on Sept. 28.
Green Street Social Club to Host Saturday’s RSL Watch Party v. Toronto FC
RSL fans looking to watch Saturday’s contest against Toronto FC with their fellow “Claret-and-Cobalt crazies” can do so at Green Street Social Club, which will again play host to the Official RSL Watch Party for the north-of-the-border affair. Like all RSL Watch Parties in the past at the Trolley Corners locale, there will be no cover charge (and no membership is required), but fans must be at least 21 years of age to enter the establishment.
The RSL Watch Party should be in full swing by the time the 5:00 p.m. kick rolls around, with the game being shown on most of the 34 TV’s strewn across Green Street’s spacious layout and patrons able to take advantage of the usual RSL gameday specials – $2.00 domestic drafts, $2.50 24-oz Budweiser cans and a $5.00 cheeseburger & chips plate.
