Most players begin to think about the next stage of their careers after 14 seasons in the pros, the portion involving final contracts, farewell tours and the like. However, most players aren’t like Kyle Beckerman, who continued to improve and reach new heights for both club and country in 2013. Beckerman had one of the best seasons of his career for the Claret-and-Cobalt in 2013, solidifying his reputation as one MLS’s best players and one of the top defensive midfielders in the region. Beckerman ended the regular season with four goals and six assists for RSL. The Claret-and-Cobalt captain led the Utah side to the 2013 MLS Cup Final and 2013 U.S. Open Cup Final while appearing in 10 matches for the USMNT. Beckerman captained the U.S. squad in its January 2013 friendly against Canada and earned CONCACAF Gold Cup Final MVP honors in the U.S.’s tournament clinching win over Panama last summer.
The always reliable and hard-working midfielder was named to his seventh-consecutive All-Star selection last year, playing 45 minutes against AS Roma. Beckerman also hit a major MLS milestone on March 3, 2013 against San Jose, going the full 90 minutes to register the 300th regular season appearance of his career.
The 31-year-old Beckerman should continue to excel in 2014, a year in which he’ll make his case to be with the USMNT as it heads to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Hungry as ever, Beckerman will be ready to lead RSL right out of the gates in his 15th season in MLS.
