Fernando Delgado Called Up To Mexico U17 Squad For World Cup Preparations

HERRIMAN, Utah (Tuesday, October 10, 2023) – Real Monarchs goalkeeper Fernando Delgado has once again been called up by the U17 Mexican Youth National team as it begins final preparations ahead of this year’s U17 World Cup, to be held in Indonesia from November 10 to December 2. The tournament was canceled in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

17-year-old Delgado appeared in a team-high 10 matches for Real Monarchs during the 2023 MLS NEXT Pro season, making 26 saves, including a spectacular double-save against Tacoma Defiance which was nominated for the MLS NEXT Pro 2023 Save of the Year. The young goalkeeper also recorded four clean sheets and four wins in his second year as a professional.

Mexico’s U17 squad has been very active in recent months leading up to the World Cup, calling up its squad every few weeks for friendly matches and training camps in hopes of making a deep run during this year’s edition. The team will face Argentina’s U17 this Wednesday, October 11, and Boca Juniors U17 the following day. On Sunday the 15th, Mexico will face Tristán Suárez, with Argentinos Juniors on the 17th.
